The Secrets of jewish Majorca

The Highlights Tour

2-hour Walk & Talk Experience

Journey to the heart of the Old Jewish Quarter

Your private guide will take you to the must-see sites of the city center. We start at the statue of Jafuda ben Cresques, a 14th century Jewish cartographer who made the world-famous Catalan Atlas map that Christopher Columbus might have used in his travels. We will walk down Leather Maker Street and learn about the old bakery named Can Miquel that up until recently was still in use and is known to be built on the site of the “sinagoga nova” or the “new synagogue.”

Explore the narrow streets of this medieval neighbourhood

As we walk through the narrow streets of this medieval neighborhood, we will look for signs and clues hidden within the walls and street names that reference a once prominent Jewish past. Together we will admire a mural that was recently painted during the pandemic highlighting a well-documented history of lust and conflict that took place between two Jews in the Tower of Love during the 1300s. Tucked away in a passageway rarely visited is the house of a medieval Jewish merchant and there we will discuss the many secret traditions that the Crypto-Jews maintained to keep their faith alive as best as possible, even under the ever-watchful eyes of the Inquisition.

We will also visit the site of the main synagogue where the Montesion Church now stands and walk down the Street of the Wind where you may find something surprising. As we end near the Church of the Conversos you will be in the heart of the city center ready to continue with the rest of your day. You will leave the tour inspired as you learn about the exciting revival of the Jewish community today, including Catholic descendants known locally as the “Chuetas” some of whom are returning to their roots more than 500 years later.
